RIVERDALE, N.Y. - On Wednesday, Feb. 8, members of the Manhattan College softball team participated in the "Valentines for Troops" program, writing letters and Valentine's messages for sailors aboard the USS Carl Vinson. The Jaspers sent cards, artwork and other mementos to 20 active-duty members of U.S. Navy Unit 25480 stationed aboard the aircraft carrier.
"Valentines for Troops" is a nationwide program providing goodwill to U.S. troops serving overseas. The letters and care packages are sent to military personnel in all branches of service at bases around the world, as well as ships at sea.
Based out of San Diego, Calif., the USS Carl Vinson hosted a men's basketball game between North Carolina and Michigan State on Veterans Day 2011. The Carl Vinson is also the ship from which Osama bin Laden's body was disposed in May 2011.
