RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College Athletic Director Bob Byrnes announced today that Alyssa Shale has been named the Jaspers' new Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. Shale had previously served as Manhattan's Academic Advisor for Athletics since February 2012.
“Alyssa has been a valued member of the Manhattan athletic team over the course of the past several semesters,” Byrnes said. “Her increased contribution in her new role will pay great dividends for the Athletic Department moving forward.”
In her new position, Shale will be responsible for all aspects of NCAA rules enforcement and eligibility requirements for each of Manhattan's 19 Division I athletic teams. She'll also act as a liaison between the Athletic Department and both the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and NCAA. In addition, Shale will serve as the moderator of Manhattan's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
“I would like to thank Bob Byrnes and Noah LeFevre for this exciting opportunity,” Shale said. “I have had the fortunate pleasure of calling ManhattanCollege home for the past year, and I very much look forward to continuing my work with the student-athletes, coaches and administration in this new capacity as we continue to grow as an athletic department.”
Shale first joined the Athletic Department staff as an Academic Advisor in February 2012. In this role, she oversaw the continuing eligibility and academic performance of almost 200 student-athletes across nine sports. Shale helped student-athletes make sure their degree program's academic requirements were being met while aiding them in course selection and registration.
In addition, Shale produced a continuing eligibility guide for the Department's head coaches, while also creating an electronic database to track student-athletes' academic performance histories. She aided student-athletes by leading instructional GPA workshops and designing a “GPA Calculator” tool for student-athlete use. She also collaborated with senior department administration to develop a new electronic database for monitoring and predicting the Academic Progress Rate (APR) of each athletic program.
Prior to her time at Manhattan, Shale worked as an English teacher and track & field coach at Wayne Hills High School in Wayne, N.J., for five years.
A 2006 graduate with high honors of Lehigh University, she was a three-time varsity letter winner in track & field, and a six-time Patriot League All-Academic Team selection. Shale is currently working towards a master's degree in School Building Leadership at Manhattan.
