GREENSBORO, N.C. – Manhattan College's Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) competed in the pole vault on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Round from North Carolina A&T University's Aggie Stadium on Thursday. With the top 12 finishers earning a place in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, McGovern came up just short of qualifying for his first trip to Nationals. He cleared 5.20 meters (17 feet, ¾ inch) to place 14th out of 47 competitors.
Down to his final attempt at 5.15 m (16'10¾), McGovern was successful on his third jump to remain in contention. He then cleared 5.20 m (17'0¾) on his first attempt, making him one of 14 competitors remaining at 5.25 m (17'2¾). With 12 vaulters already over the height, McGovern once again was down to his third attempt. Needing a good leap to keep the competition going, he was unable to get over the bar and was eliminated.
On Friday, Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland) will be in action in the women's hammer throw. The event, which kicks off Day Two of the competition, gets underway at 10 a.m.
