Pompey Sets National 400 Meter Mark for Guyana At Beijing Olympics, But Barely Misses Spot in Event's Finals

Riverdale, N.Y. (August 17, 2008) -- Barely missing a spot in the finals of the 400 meter dash, Manhattan College graduate Aliann Pompey ('99) set a new national record for Guyana in the event at the Olympic Games' semi finals held today at the Olympic Stadium in Beijing.  Pompey ran a 50.93 to finish fourth in her semifinal heat and 11th overall.

The top two from each semi-finals and the two fastest times qualified for Olympic finals.

This was a great effort and outstanding performance in her third Olympic Games," said Dan Mecca, Manhattan College Track and Field team head coach. "We could not be more proud of her; she is a credit to the great tradition of Manhattan College track and field and received tremendous support at the Olympic Games from her Guyana Olympic coach Joe Ryan."  Ryan is the assistant coach for springs and hurdles at Manhattan and is the Guyana Olympic Track and Field team coach at Beijing.
