Akapnitis Named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week

RIVERDALE, N.Y.- Manhattan freshman goalkeeper Rich Akapnitis was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday. The conference recognition was the third for the Jaspers men's lacrosse program this season.

Picking up his second consecutive MAAC victory, Akapnitis came up big in the Jaspers 10-8 home win over Jacksonville Saturday. The Hauppauge, N.Y. native made a game-high 16 saves and picked up 10 ground balls while making his ninth start of the campaign. The newcomer also caused one turnover in 60 minutes of action in the cage.

On the season, Akapnitis has recorded three victories while making 117 saves and yielding a 9.78 goals against average. The MAAC weekly award is his second after being selected MAAC Rookie of the Week on March 1 for his efforts against Robert Morris in which he made a career-high 21 saves.

Manhattan returns to action Tuesday (April 5), when they travel to West Hempstead, N.Y. to take on No. 10 Hofstra in a non-conference battle at James M. Shuart Stadium. Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m. and the contest will be televised on Fios 1 Digital Cable.
