NEW YORK - The Manhattan College men's and women's indoor track & field teams had a successful tune-up for next weekend's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships at the inaugural Millrose Games Collegiate Invitational at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Saturday.  Led by four first-place finishers, the Jasper men secured second place in the team standings.  The Manhattan women finished eighth as a team.

Manhattan's gold-medal haul actually started at Draddy Gymnasium on Friday, when Anastas Papazov (Balchik, Bulgaria) won the weight throw competition with an effort of 17.26 meters (56 feet, 7½ inches).  Papazov was one of three Jaspers to score points in the weight throw, as Colin Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished fourth (15.94 m, 52'3¾) and Edward Brentnall (Atlanta, Ga.) was fifth (15.57 m, 51'1).  On Saturday in the shot put, it was Quirke that finished first with a toss of 17.24 m (56'6¾), while Papazov placed seventh (14.23 m, 46'8¼).

Also notching a victory was Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) in the pole vault (4.80 m, 15'9).  In the 800 meters, Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) ran his best time of the season, winning the event and qualifying for the IC4A Championships in 1:53.40.  D'Emic led three scorers in the 800.  Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden) took fourth in 1:55.21, while Nick Italiano (New York, N.Y.) finished eighth in a time of 1:55.96.  Anthony Colasurdo (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) secured four points with a fifth-place finish in the 1000 meters (2:30.14), then ran the leadoff leg on Manhattan's 4 x 800 meter relay squad that placed fifth (8:09.46).  He was joined on the relay by Italiano, AJ Hanifin (Long Valley, N.J.) and Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.).  In the 4 x 400 meter relay, Tyrek Barney (Hempstead, N.Y.), Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.), Dimitri Mobley (Abington, Pa.) and Carlos Petrovich (Yonkers, N.Y.) grabbed fourth place with a time of 3:20.23.

Rounding out the athletes who scored points on the men's side were Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.), who took fifth place in the high jump (1.93 m, 6'4), and Trevell Moxey (Lansdale, Pa.), fifth in the triple jump (13.90 m, 45'7¼).  The Jaspers earned 78 team points, just eight behind first-place Maryland.

On the women's side, Heidy Palacios (Yonkers, N.Y.) improved her season-best in the 500 meters, taking third in an ECAC-qualifying time of 1:14.85.  Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) earned a victory in the long jump, leaping 5.36 m (17'7), while Andrea Nyback (Koping, Sweden) was seventh in the 60 meter hurdles (9.08).  Manhattan also earned points in the women's pole vault, as Sarah Moore (Irvington, N.Y.) and Karolin Wagner (Ribbesbuettel, Germany) tied for sixth (3.35 m, 10'11¾) and Melissa Yap (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished in a tie for eighth place (3.20 m, 10'6).

Manhattan's 23.5 points were good for eighth place in the women's team standings.  The women's title went to Penn, which tallied 117.5 points.

In addition, a select number of Jaspers were chosen to participate in the Millrose Games themselves.  Papazov and Brentnall also competed in the open weight throw, and Papazov took third place with a mark of 18.09 m (59'4¼).  In the college men's distance medley relay, which was run during the professional portion of the prestigious meet, the team of D'Emic, Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.), Barney and Rojeras qualified for the IC4A Championships with a time of 10:15.54.

The Jaspers are back at the Armory Track & Field Center next weekend for the MAAC Championships.  The men's team looks for its 16th consecutive MAAC indoor crown, while the women look to regain the title after finishing second in 2011.  Action gets underway at 6 p.m. on Friday night.
