BUFFALO, N.Y. - Freshman RJ Meany opened up the second day of competition at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Championships by breaking the Manhattan school record in the 400 yard Individual Medley finishing with a time of 4:22.42 seconds. The previous mark was held by teammate PJ Sweeney set in 2010 at 4:31.75 seconds.
Classmate Scott Isaacs had another impressive showing in Buffalo during the 100 yard backstroke. The freshman put his name in the Jaspers record book beating Matt Kaftanski's (Class of 2010) 55.57 seconds mark with a time of 54.31 seconds in the prelims followed by 54.19 seconds in the consolation finals, finishing 10th overall.
Junior Robert Varieur reached his second finals in as many days by breaking another of his own records in the 200 yard freestyle. Last season, Varieur completed the event in 1:44.11 seconds. Today, he bested that effort by .05 seconds finishing with a time of 1:44.06 seconds. He would then lower the mark even further, taking fourth in the finals with a new school mark of 1:43.04 seconds.
Isaacs would later team up with Sweeney, Dennis Daly, and Michael Scire in the 200 Medley Relay finishing with a time of 1:36.23 seconds, 0.07 seconds faster than the school record set in 2011. Meanwhile, Varieur, Mickey Ruddy, Chris Fusco and Ryan Klages obliterated the Manhattan record in the 800 yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:07.93 seconds. The previous best was 7:14.18 seconds recorded last season.
After two days of competition, Manhattan sits 9th place overall with 149.50 points. The final day of competition begins at 10:00 a.m. on Sat. Feb. 18 on the campus of Erie Community College.
