FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - On Saturday afternoon, the Manhattan College women's tennis team took a break from Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) competition to conclude its non-conference schedule against Bryant. However, the Jaspers (5-11) were unable to carry the momentum from their victory over Saint Peter's into the matchup with the Bulldogs (11-5), as Bryant notched a 7-0 triumph at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. In a tight match at No. 1 doubles, Bryant's Claudia Hidalgo and Marcela Brandao held on for an 8-6 win over Lili Johnson (Tulsa, Okla.) and Brianna Turano (Nutley, N.J.). The Bulldogs clinched the doubles point when Rosie Bird and Devlin-Ann Ammendola recorded an 8-4 victory over Hilary Valenzuela (Mesa, Ariz.) and Caitlin Bricketto (Coral Springs, Fla.) in the No. 2 position. At No. 3 doubles, Christina Ton (Milipitas, Calif.) and Alyssa Rosello (Garden City, N.Y.) dropped an 8-1 decision to Stephanie Smyers and Irma Rodriguez Lockwood. Johnson and Hidalgo also played a hotly-contested match at No. 1 singles, with Hidalgo prevailing, 6-4, 6-3. Turano dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to May Vickers at No. 4 singles, while No. 5 Stephanie Tsao (Scarsdale, N.Y.) suffered a 6-1, 6-4 defeat against Smyers. At No. 2 singles, Valenzuela lost to Ammendola by a 6-1, 6-0 margin. Bryant won the other two matches by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Brandao defeated Bricketto in the No. 3 position, and Rosie Byrd beat Rosello at No. 6 singles. There was also an exhibition matchup between Catherine Clark (Salem, Conn.) and Rodriguez Lockwood. Bryant won that match, as well, with Rodriguez Lockwood earning a 6-1, 6-4 victory. The Jaspers (2-3 MAAC) host Niagara (6-12, 2-4 MAAC) on Sunday at 12 p.m. in a match that they must win to earn a place in the four-team MAAC Championships.
