RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College women's swimming team has been honored for its success in the classroom with an APR Public Recognition Award, it was announced today by the NCAA. The Public Recognition Award is presented annually by the NCAA to those teams that finish among the top 10 percent nationally in multi-year Annual Progress Rate (APR) in a given sport.
A total of 954 teams were publicly recognized this year, and the women's swimming program was the only Jasper squad to receive the honor. At least one Manhattan team has been recognized each year since the NCAA began compiling APR data in 2006.
The NCAA created the APR as a means of tracking real-time academic success of student-athletes. Every program in the nation is tracked, with factors such as graduation rates, eligibility and retention taken into account. The final APR is a numeric value, and teams that don't reach a certain threshold are penalized by the NCAA. The most recent APR numbers are based on the 2007-08 thru 2010-11 school years.
Full multi-year APRs for all teams in every sport will be announced by the NCAA on June 20.
