EUGENE, Ore. – On Thursday, the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships got underway at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. With places on the U.S. National Team at stake, Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame member Jake Freeman and current Jasper John Dove (Monroe, N.Y.) were in action.
In the men's hammer throw, Freeman got out to a distance of 65.80 meters (215 feet, 10 inches) on his first attempt. However, he fouled on both of his remaining throws and ended up in 16th place overall. Freeman's Nike/New York Athletic Club teammate Kibwe Johnson won his second straight national title with a toss of 76.95 m (252'5).
Meanwhile, Dove competed in the first round of the 1500 meters at the USA Junior Championships, which are being held alongside the senior meet. He needed to place among the top four in his heat or have one of the next four best times in order to qualify for the final. Dove was sixth in his heat, but his 4:02.09 clocking was good for one of the time qualifiers. He placed 11th overall.
Dove will be one of 12 competitors in the final, which is scheduled for 8:08 p.m. ET on Saturday. The top two finishers will represent the United States at the Pan American Junior Championships in Edmonton, Alta., from July 31-Aug. 2.
