RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Manhattan College student-athletes continue to succeed in the classroom as depicted in the latest Athletics Academic Report. According to the report, 14 of the Jaspers' 19 Division I athletic programs held a team grade point average above 3.0 during the 2008-09 academic year, while 55.6% of the 302 student-athletes maintained a cumulative index above 3.0.
“I am pleased to announce our student-athletes continue to maintain our high academic tradition,” explained Director of Athletics Robert Byrnes. “This success in the classroom is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our student-athletes, coaches, and academic support staff.”
At the conclusion of the spring semester, a total of 172 student-athletes (57%) earned a term grade point average above 3.0. Additionally, 99 were selected to the Dean's Honor List (3.4 term index and above). Among the 19 athletic teams, the women's tennis team logged the highest team term GPA with a 3.39 index. The men's golf team topped the men's programs with a 3.2 mark.
Nine student-athletes registered 4.0 GPAs in the spring. Seniors Fernando Segares (men's soccer), Angela Bernarde (cross country/track), Viviane Masters (women's soccer), Anne Mohan (swimming), Alyssa Getzel (volleyball), Andrea Reiff (volleyball), along with sophomores Nicole Harrison (women's basketball), Nora Hulton-Sacchi (women's tennis) and freshman James Rosenberger (cross country/track) poured in perfect indexes. Manhattan also placed third among conference institutions with 111 student-athletes named to the MAAC All-Academic Team during the 2008-09 academic year.
For the last 10 years nearly 60% of Manhattan's 6,409 student athletes have maintained a 3.0 term index per semester. Also during this span, 36.1% of student-athletes were named to the Dean's Honor List.
