Sydney Volovski Chosen Preseason All-MAAC
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – After being selected as last season’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Year, Manhattan College sophomore outside hitter Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) has been named to the 2013 Preseason All-MAAC Team by the conference’s 10 head coaches. The results of the MAAC Preseason Poll were also announced, and the Jaspers were tabbed to finish fourth.
Volovski became the second Jasper ever to capture Rookie of the Year honors last season. She finished second on the team with 269 kills and ranked second among MAAC freshmen in kills per set and hitting percentage in 2012.
“Sydney can play any position for us,” Head Coach Mark Jones said. “She’s definitely going to be a force in this conference. I expect a lot of great things for her.”
Defending MAAC champion Fairfield was the near-unanimous pick to repeat, collecting 99 points in the poll. Siena was second with 85 points, followed by Canisius with 74 and the Jaspers with 70. Positions five-eight went to Iona (53), Marist (50), Niagara (49) and Rider (36). Saint Peter’s (18) and MAAC newcomer Quinnipiac (16) rounded out the poll. Fairfield’s Rachel Romansky was named MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.
“You never know what’s going to happen in this conference,” Jones said. “It’s a very long season. You have to come prepared for every match, and I think this group is up for the task.”The Jaspers went 15-15 overall last season and finished fifth in the MAAC with a 10-8 conference mark. Manhattan opens the 2013 campaign at UMass Lowell on Friday night.
