Laguna Kennedy, Volovski Named Student-Athletes of the Month
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan men’s soccer freshman forward Daniel Laguna Kennedy and Volleyball’s sophomore outside hitter Sydney Volovski were named the Male and Female Student-Athlete’s of the Month for the month of October as announced by the College’s Athletic Department on Monday.
Laguna Kennedy scored five of his team high seven goals in the month of October, including two game winning goals. Playing in all eight games, and starting six, the forward solidified himself as Manhattan's top scoring threat in just his rookie season. Laguna Kennedy started his stellar month by scoring two goals, including the game winner, in the Jaspers' 5-2 victory over Fairfield at Gaelic Park on Oct. 9. He followed that up by scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 road victory over Saint Peter's on Oct. 16 before adding two more at Siena on Oct. 26. Laguna Kennedy was named MAAC Rookie of the Week following his performance against Fairfield.
The Jaspers men’s soccer team qualified for the four-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament for the first time since 2001 and will face top seeded Monmouth on Fri., Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. at Lessing Field on the campus of Fairfield University.
Volovski led the Jaspers with 2.97 kills per set and a .257 hitting percentage in nine October matches, as Manhattan moved into first place in the MAAC. She had four blocks in the five-set victory at Canisius on Oct. 6, then had the performance of her career against Iona on Oct. 12. Volovski smashed 26 kills on .434 hitting, as the Jaspers knocked off the Gaels in five sets. She also recorded eight digs and three assists in that match. Volovski followed up that performance with a 17-kill effort against NJIT on Oct. 16, and she hit .348 with 11 kills in the 3-0 sweep of Siena on Oct. 26.
The Manhattan volleyball team currently sits in first place in the MAAC and can clinch their first regular season title since 2003 with a victory in their final match of the regular season. The Jaspers will travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. on Sat., Nov. 16 for a 7 p.m. contest against archrival Iona.
