Manhattan Claims Two MAAC Weekly Awards
RIVERDALE, NY – Two members of the Manhattan College softball team received Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards on Tuesday. Freshman Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ) took home Rookie of the Week honors, while junior Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week.
Gebhardt had six hits and six RBIs in seven games. She recorded two hits, including a three-run triple, and scored twice in game one of the doubleheader against Hartford on March 7, then ripped a double in the second game. Gebhardt also doubled against North Dakota State in the first game of the Stetson Westin Invitational on Friday before going 1-for-4 with an RBI later that night against host Stetson. After notching a hit, an RBI and a run scored against Colgate on Sunday morning, she ended the tournament by picking up another RBI on a sacrifice fly against Columbia.
Matazinsky, meanwhile, went 2-1 with a 1.31 ERA in three appearances last week. She tossed a complete game in the home opener against Hartford on March 7, allowing just two unearned runs on six hits while striking out four. Matazinsky then retired nine straight Stetson hitters between the second and fourth innings of Friday night before pitching a five-inning complete game against Columbia on Sunday. She held the Lions to one run on six hits and recorded four strikeouts without issuing a walk.
This is the first time that Matazinsky has been selected MAAC Pitcher of the Week, although she’s previously earned both Player and Rookie of the Week recognition. She was a First Team All-MAAC honoree last season, and was named to this year’s Preseason All-MAAC Team.
The Jaspers (7-7), who have won four straight games, return to action this weekend at the St. John’s Tournament.
