RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Senior pitcher/infielder Melissa Donnelly (Long Beach, N.Y.) of the Manhattan College softball team has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Donnelly hit .600 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in four games against Lafayette and Quinnipiac over the weekend.
After going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the first game of Manhattan's doubleheader sweep of Lafayette on Saturday, Donnelly went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in game two. She had an RBI single in the first inning, then blasted a long three-run home run to center field in the second, as the Lady Jaspers posted a 9-1 victory.
Against Quinnipiac on Sunday, her two-run home run in the sixth inning of game one accounted for the only Manhattan offense in a 5-2 loss. Then in the second game, Donnelly finished just short of the cycle, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs. She crushed a solo homer leading off the second inning of the game, then had an RBI double in the third. Donnelly came up with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and delivered a two-run double down the left field line that tied the game at 9-9, capping the Lady Jaspers' comeback from seven runs down.
For the week, Donnelly went 9-for-15 with five extra-base hits and five runs scored. She slugged 1.333 in the four games.
A two-time First Team All-MAAC selection, Donnelly is the first Manhattan player to earn MAAC weekly honors this season. She currently leads the Lady Jaspers in home runs (3) and RBIs (14), while ranking second on the team in runs (10) and third in hits (15).
The Lady Jaspers (8-13) return to action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, when they host Columbia (7-14) at Gaelic Park. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for last Thursday, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
