Jaspers Earn MAAC Baseball Weekly Awards
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan senior outfielder Mike McCann was named MAAC Player of the Week and junior pitcher Mike Giordano earned MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors as announced by the league on Monday. McCann hit .500 (6-for-12) and logged a 1.083 slugger percentage which helped Manhattan (12-11, 6-0 MAAC) to four straight wins last week. Giordano was dominant in his start on Sunday against Fairfield as he recorded a career-high nine strikeouts for his second straight conference victory.
McCann, a product of Belle Harbor, N.Y., drove in six runs, posted a .563 on-base percentage, and had two doubles, one triple and a home run over the four game stretch. McCann had two multi-hit performances last week, recording two hits in a 9-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday and registering a 2-for-3 effort from the plate in Sunday's 3-1 win against Fairfield.
The lefty slugger drove in all six of his runs during Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Stags. McCann set a career-high with five RBI in a 6-2 game one victory over Fairfield. Then in game two, he scored three of the Jaspers six runs and hit a solo home run which lifted Manhattan to a 6-1 triumph. McCann hit .571 in the three game series sweep of Fairfield to keep Manhattan perfect atop the MAAC standings. He also extended the Jaspers' longest active hitting streak to 13 games.
Giordano delivered his top performance of the season by pitching the Jaspers to a 3-1 victory over Fairfield on Sunday at Van Cortlandt Park. Giordano, a right-handed pitcher from Bedford, N.Y., struck out a career-high nine batters and did not yield a walk over eight innings. Giordano went to work early striking out five of the first six outs. He peppered the strike zone with 77 strikes in a 107 pitch effort, and limited the Stags to a .172 batting average against.
Manhattan carries its seven game winning streak into Tuesday's non-conference affair with Long Island at Van Cortlandt Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
