|Jaspers Fall to Fordham In Battle of the Bronx|
BRONX, N.Y. - After rain washed away the Manhattan College women's tennis team's match at Wagner shortly after singles play got underway on Saturday, the Jaspers had clear skies on Sunday for their matchup with local rival Fordham. However, it was the Rams that came out on top, as Fordham (1-0) won all nine matches en route to a 7-0 victory over the Jaspers (2-1) at the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts.
At No. 1 doubles, Lili Johnson (Tulsa, Okla.) and Brianna Turano (Nutley, N.J.) dropped a close 8-6 decision to Amy Simidian and Bella Genkina. Fordham clinched the doubles point with Sarah Ali and Hanna Fritzinger's 8-3 victory over Hilary Valenzuela (Mesa, Ariz.) and Caitlin Bricketto (Coral Springs, Fla.) in the No. 2 position, while Manhattan's No. 3 tandem of Christina Ton (Milipitas, Calif.) and Stephanie Tsao (Scarsdale, N.Y.) fell to Angelika Dabu and Julie Leong by a score of 8-0. Manhattan did pick up one doubles victory, though, as Alyssa Rosello (Garden City, N.Y.) and Catherine Clark (Salem, Conn.) topped Taylor Holt and Sarah Tremaine, 8-2, in an exhibition match.
Rosello continued her strong play in her No. 6 singles match, capturing the first set before suffering a 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Bethany Boyle. After dropping the first set, Johnson took the second to a tiebreaker before falling 6-0, 7-6 to Simidian at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Valenzuela fell to Ali by a 6-1, 6-2 count. Bricketto was topped by Dabu, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, while Turano, after a tight first set, dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Fritzinger in the No. 4 position. Fordham completed the sweep when Gelkina beat Ton 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles match.
The Jaspers (1-0 MAAC) return to action with a matchup at Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Fairfield (1-0, 1-0 MAAC). The match had originally been scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 29, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
