SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior guard/forward George Beamon (Roslyn, N.Y.) of the Manhattan College men's basketball team has been named to the Preseason All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Second Team by the conference's 10 head coaches.  The announcement was made during the MAAC Preseason Awards Show at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Tuesday.  The results of the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll were also announced, and Manhattan was chosen to finish eighth.

Beamon earned a Third Team All-MAAC selection last season after leading the Jaspers and ranking third in the MAAC in scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game.  He had a career-high 35-point performance in an 84-81 win over Siena at Draddy Gymnasium on Feb. 13.  Beamon also averaged 6.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game while shooting .437 from the floor last season.  In addition, he was selected to the All-Metropolitan Third Team by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.

Iona's Mike Glover was selected as the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.  Joining Glover on the First Team were his Iona teammate Scott Machado, as well as Fairfield's Derek Needham and Ryan Olander and Rider's Novar Gadson.  The rest of the Second Team included Gaby Belardo of Canisius, Fairfield's Rakim Sanders, and Erik Etherly and Shane Walker of Loyola.  Making up the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team were Iona's Kyle Smith, Jeff Jones and Daniel Stewart of Rider, Darius Conley of Saint Peter's, and Siena's OD Anosike.

Iona finished with 97 points in the poll to edge Fairfield (92) for first place.  Loyola was third with 76 points, followed by Rider with 71 points.  Defending MAAC champion Saint Peter's came in fifth with 52 points.  Siena and Niagara were next with 44 and 42 points, respectively.  The Jaspers collected 33 points in the poll to finish ahead of Canisius (25) and Marist (18).

The Jaspers unofficially open the 2011-12 season with the annual Green-White Scrimmage at Draddy Gymnasium on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.  Immediately following the Green-White Scrimmage will be the Manhattan Basketball Season Preview alumni event in the new Café 1853 on the first floor of Thomas Hall.  Admission to the Green-White Scrimmage is free, while tickets to the alumni event cost $30.
