|Varieur Takes Second in 100 Freestyle on Final Day of MAACs|
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Junior Robert Varieur wrapped up his record breaking MAAC Championships with a second place finish in the 100 yard freestyle swimming a school record 45.75 seconds, and finishing just 0.15 seconds off the championship time of Rider's Brett Pedersen.
Cullen Balcanoff and Chris Fusco qualified for the consolation finals it the 200 backstroke as each finished under the previous school mark set by Balcanoff (1:59.75 seconds) in 2011. Fusco placed 14th with a final time of 1:59.08 seconds while Balcanoff edged his teammate for 13th place finishing in 1:58.53 seconds.
In the 200 yard breaststroke, Dennis Daly placed eighth after he bested his own Manhattan record of 2:09.62 seconds in the prelims with a performance of 2:07.54 seconds. He would be unable to lower the mark even more in the finals, finishing at 2:07.92 seconds as the second Jasper of the day to reach the championship finals in a men's event.
The records continued to fall for the Jasper men as PJ Sweeney cruised to a record time of 1:56.07 seconds in the 200 yard butterfly beating his own record of 2:01.12 seconds in the event.
In the final event of the weekend, Varieur would anchor the 400 yard freestyle team comprising of Ryan Klages, Mickey Ruddy, and Michael Scire as they placed eighth with a time of 3:09.22 seconds that blazed past the previous school record of 3:12.37 seconds set last season.
The Jaspers as a team finished ninth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center on the campus of Erie Community College. Manhattan will next send its swimmers to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
