RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan sophomore Rhamel Brown became the first Jasper in program history to be named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 'Defensive Player of the Year' as announced on Thursday night during the MAAC Basketball Postseason Awards Show at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Brown, a 6'6" 215-pound forward from Brooklyn, dominated games during the regular-season with his defense as he led the MAAC with 79 blocks, a Manhattan single season record.
Brown energized the Jaspers with his superb play coming off the bench in 26 of 31 appearances. His 2.5 blocks per game average ranks 19th in NCAA Division I, and in MAAC contests he was even better averaging 2.8 blocks per outing. Brown swatted 51 of his 79 shots in conference games.
In only two years with the program, Brown has already engraved his name on Manhattan's career blocks list. He enters the MAAC Tournament third all-time with 147 career blocks. Brown set the Jaspers freshman blocks record last season with 68, the third most for a single season in program history.
Brown swatted five or more shots in five games this season, including a career-high six blocks on two occasions in victories over Saint Peter's (Dec. 4) and Hofstra (Dec. 10). He also collected 96 of his 152 rebounds on the defensive glass during the regular-season. In 18.6 minutes per game, Brown averaged 7.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and he ranks second in the MAAC with a .596 field goal percentage.
Brown and the Jaspers enter the 2012 MAAC Basketball Championships as the #3 seed and will play their Quarterfinal match up with #6 Siena on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.
