Kate Bowen Named First Team All-Northeast Region
2012 NFCA Division I All-Region Teams
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan College sophomore second baseman/pitcher Kate Bowen (Newtown, Conn.), who last week was named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Second Team, picked up another honor on Thursday when she was selected to the All-Northeast Region First Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). She's now eligible for selection to the NFCA Division I All-American team.
Bowen, who was chosen as a utility player/pitcher, led the Jaspers in every major offensive category in 2012. She hit .348 with 49 hits and 26 RBIs, while also pacing the squad in slugging percentage (.546), on-base percentage (.429), home runs (6), runs (26), doubles (8) and stolen bases (6). Bowen also made 24 appearances as a pitcher, tossing a team-high 118 innings. She registered a team-best 3.50 ERA and her five wins were tied for the most on the squad. Bowen also hurled a pair of shutouts.
She was named MAAC Player of the Week on May 7 after leading the Jaspers to victories in their final three games of the season. Bowen tossed an eight-inning, two-hit shutout and hit a walk-off grand slam in a 4-0 victory over Fairfield on May 5, then went a combined 2-for-6 with three RBIs and four runs scored in a doubleheader sweep at Saint Peter's the next day. In game two of that twinbill, she belted a solo homer and earned the win in the circle.
Bowen, the Jaspers' first All-Region selection since Jaci Rahey in 2010, also earned a place on the MAAC All-Academic Team this season.
