Shane Richards Tabbed MAAC Rookie of the Week
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan freshman forward Shane Richards was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week as announced on Monday. Richards averaged 14.5 points and buried eight 3-pointers in two appearances against Rider and Marist last week.
Richards exploded for a team-high 18 points on Thursday, knocking down a career-high six 3-pointers against Rider before a national audience on ESPN3. The 6'5" New York City native shot 46.2% beyond the arc in 31 minutes off the bench as he matched a career-high in scoring versus the Broncs.
Then on Sunday, Richards delivered his second straight double-digit scoring effort, posting 11 points to help lead Manhattan to a 65-53 victory over Marist. Richards sank two 3-pointers in the contest with the Red Foxes, he shot 50% from the field and hit all three free-throw attempts.
Richards has developed into one of the Jaspers top contributors this season. He averaged 10 points per contest in the last 10 games, since earning his first career start at Marist on Dec. 7. Richards leads Manhattan with 28 3-pointers this season, and he ranks second in the MAAC averaging 3.0 per game against conference opponents.
Manhattan returns to action Thursday when the Jaspers visit Canisius at 7 p.m. The Jaspers complete the Western New York conference swing on Saturday with a 3 p.m. meeting at Niagara.
