Jaspers Suffer 7-0 Loss to Howard
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Manhattan College women's tennis team took on Howard in a non-conference match at the U.S. Naval Academy's USNA Tennis Courts on Sunday morning. Taking on a Bison team (1-3) is favored to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this season, the shorthanded Jaspers (2-4) dropped a 7-0 decision.
The day started with doubles action. Manhattan's top team of Lili Johnson (Tulsa, Okla.) and Brianna Turano (Nutley, N.J.) lost to Katelyn Stokes and Talia Johnson by a score of 8-1, while Howard clinched the doubles point with Audria Bell and Umarah Mughee's 8-0 victory over Stephanie Tsao (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Megan Maffei (Stony Point, N.Y.) in the No. 2 position. The Bison also notched an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, as Stacy Roehman and Gabrielle Moxey topped Catherine Clark (Salem, Conn.) and Alyssa Rosello (Garden City, N.Y.).
Manhattan fell into an early hole in singles play when Turano was unable to finish her match due to a shoulder injury. She lost the first set at No. 2 singles, 6-1 to Mughee before she was forced to retire. At No. 1 singles, Lili Johnson fell to Stokes by a 6-0, 6-0 count. Rosello lost to Roehman by an identical 6-0, 6-0 score at No. 4 singles.
Tsao played the most competitive singles match of the day, dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Talia Johnson in the No. 3 position. After losing the first set of her No. 5 singles match, Clark played well in the second set, but ultimately lost, 6-1, 6-4, to Moxey. The Bison then completed the sweep with Bell's 6-2, 6-3 victory over Maffei at No. 6 singles.The Jaspers return to action next Sunday, when they take on Wagner (2-2) at 1 p.m. The match will be played at the Queens College Indoor Tennis Center in Queens.
