WEST POINT, N.Y. – Brianna Turano (Nutley, N.J.) recorded a pair of wins, but it was not enough for the Manhattan College women’s tennis team on Friday, as the Jaspers (5-4) dropped a 6-1 decision to Army (18-2) at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

Turano teamed with Gabriella Leon (Woodmere, N.Y.) at No. 1 doubles, and the duo defeated Margaret Iliev and Carly Riney in a tiebreaker.  Turano and Leon took the tiebreaker 7-5 to notch an 8-7 victory.  However, Army won the other two doubles matches to clinch the doubles point.  After Maya Parker and Nancy Porter defeated Caitlin Bricketto (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Salua Pizano (Guadalajara, Mexico) by an 8-0 count in the No. 2 position, Manhattan’s No. 3 team of Alyssa Rosello (Garden City, N.Y.) and Catherine Clark (Marlborough, Conn.) fell to Haley O’Connor and Taler Brazell by a score of 8-4.

A tiebreaker was also required in Turano’s No. 1 singles match against Parker.  After the players split sets (and with the match already decided), the third set was played as a 10-point super-tiebreak.  The tiebreak ran past the required 10 points before Turano finally emerged victorious, 7-5, 3-6, 14-12.

Army, however, won each of the other five singles matches in straight sets.  At No. 2 singles, Porter notched a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Leon.  Bricketto fell to Riney by a 6-1, 6-1 count at No. 3 singles, while O’Connor knocked off Pizano 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 position.  That victory clinched the match for the Black Knights.  The scores at No. 5 and No. 6 singles were identical 6-0, 6-2 decisions that went to Army, with Brazell beating Rosello in the No. 5 spot and No. 6 Clark falling to Caroline Lorenzini.

The Jaspers were supposed to visit Hartford (0-5) in another non-conference showdown on Saturday, but that match has been cancelled.  Manhattan now returns to action with a 4 p.m. matchup at Sacred Heart (4-7) on Wednesday.
