Riverdale, N.Y. (May 4, 2006)-The first five names listed on the 2006 Men's Tennis All-MAAC First Team should look very familiar to the Jasper faithful due to the simple fact that all five of the players helped Manhattan three-peat as MAAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions. Headlining the All-MAAC First Team is freshman Bogdan Borta who also received the titles of MAAC Rookie of the Year and MAAC Player of the Year. Rounding out the major award-winners was Manhattan head coach Arthur Bobko as he was named the Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year.
Borta looked like anything, but a rookie during his first collegiate campaign. The native of Romania took the league by storm, going a perfect 7-0 in MAAC Regular Season play and winning each of his three matches in the MAAC Tournament. All ten wins came with Borta playing in the top singles spot.
Joining Borta on the All-MAAC First Team were Zoltan Bus at #2 singles, Peter Czink in the third singles slot, Diego Alvarado at #4 singles, and Filip Szymik at fifth singles. Szymik shares the #5 singles spot on the First Team with Marist's Ray Joseph, but the Manhattan sophomore also received First Team recognition at #2 doubles along with Bus. Borta and Czink, who teamed up at first doubles for the Jaspers for most of the season, earned All-MAAC Second Team Honors at #2 doubles.
Earning the MAAC's automatic bid for the third year in a row, Manhattan is headed south to take on Miami in an NCAA First Round match-up.
