Williams Snags Second Straight MAAC Rookie of the Week Nod
RIVERDALE, NY – After throwing the first no-hitter in program history, freshman pitcher Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT) has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week. This is her second straight MAAC Rookie of the Week selection.
Williams took a perfect game into the sixth and allowed just a pair of walks in the contest. After a one-out walk in the seventh, she struck out the last two hitters to complete the no-hitter. Williams ended up with 14 strikeouts, the most in a game for a Manhattan hurler since Keli Redding had 14 against Green Bay on March 21, 2013.
Her no-hitter was the first in the MAAC since Marist’s Jayne Oberdorf on April 17, 2016. It was also one of two thrown in the conference this week. Iona’s Alana Evans no-hit Monmouth on Saturday and was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week for that effort.
In addition to her back-to-back Rookie of the Week nods, Williams earned MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors on March 28. Victoria Ross (Bloomfield, NJ) was named MAAC Player of the Week on March 28, while Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) has been recognized as MAAC Pitcher of the Week twice this season (March 14, April 4). Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ), meanwhile, was selected MAAC Rookie of the Week on March 14.The Jaspers (22-12) are currently in first place in the MAAC with an 8-2 conference record. Manhattan resumes its MAAC schedule this weekend, but first continues its eight-game homestand by welcoming Lafayette (6-19) to Gaelic Park for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
