2014 Menís Lacrosse Schedule Announced
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan men’s lacrosse team unveiled its 2014 schedule today. The 15-game slate features seven home contests including perennial power Princeton. The Jaspers will also begin new rivalries with Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) foe North Carolina and new Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Monmouth.
“Our players deserve to play as competitive a schedule as possible,” said Head Coach Steve Manitta who is entering his second season in Riverdale. “I feel like we have given them the opportunity to prove themselves game in and game out.”
The season opens with three consecutive road games beginning on Feb. 8. For the second consecutive year, Manhattan will travel to Rutgers before visiting reigning ACC Champion North Carolina (Feb. 15). It will be the first meeting ever with the Tar Heels and second ever with a current member of the ACC and the first since a 2006 tilt at Virginia. A trip to Fairfield on Feb. 22 ends the road swing and marks the first time the two programs have met since the 2001 season.
The Jaspers will open their home slate against top-25 power Princeton on Feb. 25. The Tigers last visited Gaelic Park in 2010. Manhattan then plays two more home contests against Hartford (March 1) and Mount St. Mary’s (March 8) before opening conference play.
In a new MAAC rivalry, Manhattan will travel to take on Quinnipiac on March 15 before visiting Stony Brook (March 18) in a non-conference matchup. The team then visits Marist (March 29) prior to a home contest with Colonial Athletic Association foe Delaware (April 2). After a trip to face Canisius (April 5) and a non-conference tilt against Lafayette on April 8, the Jaspers finish their regular season with three home games.
First-year program Monmouth will make its inaugural trip to Gaelic Park on April 12 one week before defending MAAC Champion Detroit comes to Riverdale (April 19). The final contest of the year occurs on April 26 as Manhattan hosts Siena on Senior Night.
The 2014 MAAC Championships will be held at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on the campus of Marist College. The tournament will take place May 2-4 with the winner advancing to the national tournament.
