RIVERDALE, N.Y. - While the international track & field season has for the most part come to an end, there is still one major meet on the calendar for a number of athletes-including former Manhattan College star Aliann Pompey.  From October 3-12, Pompey will represent her native Guyana at the Commonwealth Games, which are being held this year in Delhi, India.

Pompey will compete in her specialty, the 400 meters.  A three-time Olympian, she won the gold medal in the event at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England.

This will be her final meet of the 2010 season.  In March, Pompey made the final at the World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar, where she finished sixth.  She also competed at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in July, winning the silver in the 400 and reaching the final in the 200 meters.

The Commonwealth Games, held every four years in the even year opposite the Olympics, were first contested in 1930 as the "British Empire Games."  They bring together athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, which is primarily made up of countries that were at one time part of the British Empire.  A total of 73 countries and territories will compete in Delhi.
