Lady Jaspers Draw Hartford In Preseason WNIT
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College women's basketball team found out where it will begin its 2011-12 campaign on Tuesday when the bracket for the 2011 Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) was unveiled. The Lady Jaspers will open the season on Nov. 11 with a matchup against America East Conference champion Hartford in the first-round of the Preseason WNIT.
Manhattan is coming off the winningest season in program history. The Lady Jaspers went 24-10, setting a school-record for victories, and advanced to the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) in 2010-11. Twelve letterwinners, including four starters, from that squad return this season. This will be the Lady Jaspers' first appearance in the Preseason WNIT.
Hartford got off to a slow start in 2010-11, but notched three victories, including upsets of No. 1 seed UMBC and second-seeded Boston University (on the Terriers' home floor), in the America East Tournament to earn the sixth NCAA Tournament berth in program history. The Hawks fell to Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to finish with a 17-16 record.
The Lady Jaspers are guaranteed three games in the Preseason WNIT. The Manhattan-Hartford winner takes on either Drexel or Long Island in the quarterfinals, while the loser will be placed in a "Consolation bracket quad" with three other first-round losers. The quarterfinals are tentatively scheduled for Nov. 13-14, while the consolation round will be held on Nov. 18-19.
