RIVERDALE, N.Y. - After 11 seasons at the helm, Walter Olsewski is retiring as head coach of the Manhattan College men's golf program.  He will continue to serve as Manhattan's men's and women's swimming head coach, a position he has held since 1997.

A 1968 Manhattan graduate, Olsewski is entering his 15th season as head coach of the women's swimming program.  He took on the additional role of head men's golf coach in 2000 and has also directed the men's swimming team since the program was reinstated in 2008.

"After consulting with Mr. Byrnes, our Athletic Director, and my wife, I feel that I can no longer effectively coach three teams at Manhattan," Olsewski said.  "To that end, I have decided to retire as golf coach and focus on the men's and women's swimming programs.  I believe it is in the best interest of the College and the student-athletes for the golf team to get a fresh start under the new coach in September."

"Coach Olsewski has been a terrific coach and mentor to all of our golf student-athletes," Athletic Director Bob Byrnes said.  "He has especially lived up to the College mission of 'student' first in student-athlete.  Walter's three teams have consistently been at the top of our Academic Performance Chart.  He is a great credit to Manhattan College and I'm pleased that he will continue with our swim programs."

Under Olsewski's leadership, the men's golf team had some of its greatest success.  In 2001, the Jaspers placed fourth at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, the highest finish in program history.  The following season, Chris Damiano (third) and Marty Tobias (fifth) earned All-MAAC honors with top-five finishes at the MAAC Championships.  In addition, Nick LaBanca took fifth at the MAAC Championships in 2010 and Thomas Romano finished the 2011 season with a national ranking of No. 109, the highest ever for a Manhattan golfer.

Olsewski's student-athletes have also found success in the classroom, with 23 Manhattan golfers earning MAAC All-Academic Team selections over the past seven seasons.  The golf team regularly boasts one of the highest team GPAs on campus.
