Abiog's Hat Trick Fuels Manhattan In Loss At Monmouth
West Long Branch, NJ - Senior Alex Abiog (Saratoga, CA / Bellarmine College Prep) scored a game-high three goals to pace Manhattan in a 7-3 loss to MAAC Regular Season Champion Monmouth in a game that was broadcast live on ESPNU.
Junior Michael Zingaro (Cortlandt Manor, NY / Walter Panas) was outstanding in goal for the visitors, recording 14 saves.
The Hawks improve to 12-3 and 6-0 in the MAAC while the Jaspers conclude the 2017 campaign at 3-11 and 0-6 in the league.
Monmouth jumped out to 4-0 lead before Abiog found the back of the net off a Matt Garvey (Sr., Essex Falls, NJ / West Essex) pass with 4:30 to play until halftime. The Hawks responded just over a minute later in assuming a 5-1 lead at the break.
After intermission, Chris Daly opened the second-half scoring in putting Monmouth up 6-1. Abiog would immediately answer with a man-up score off a CJ Scharf (Fr., West Islip, NY / West Islip) pass to trim.
Manhattan then opened the fourth quarter scoring with another Abiog goal in trimming the deficit to 6-3 with 13:43 to play. The Jaspers threatened to make it a two-goal but freshman Luke Hanson's (Middletown, NY / Minisink Valley) shot hit the post at the 10:48 mark
Manhattan would continue to fight but get no closer as the Hawks capped their 7-3 win with a Gordon Phillips goal at the 1:07 mark.
Bryce Wasserman scored two goals with two assists whilie Eamon Campbell had two scores to pace Monmouth with Nick Hreshko making 11 saves in earning the win.
