Emily Sandford Named MAAC Rookie of the Week
RIVERDALE, NY – Freshman midfielder Emily Sandford (Floral Park, NY) of the Manhattan College women’s lacrosse team has been selected Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week. She scored four goals, including the game-winner, in the Jaspers’ 16-3 victory over Saint Mary’s on Sunday.
Sandford got the scoring started with a free position goal just 2:07 into the contest. She added three more tallies while also handing out an assist in the game. Sandford scored on all four shots she took against the Gaels, two of which were free position attempts. On Wednesday against Lafayette, she collected a pair of ground balls and recorded a draw control.
She’s the first Jasper to be recognized by the MAAC since Megan Yarusso and Nikki Prestiano earned Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors on Feb. 15, 2016. Sandford is Manhattan’s first MAAC Rookie of the Week since Yarusso was selected on March 25, 2013.The Jaspers (1-4) return to action with a 3 p.m. matchup at Rutgers (4-3) on Wednesday. The contest was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was moved back a day due to the impending winter weather.
