Salem and Gazzola Named to MAAC All-Tournament Team

TRENTON, N.J.Manhattan junior pitcher Mike Gazzola and sophomore third baseman Chad Salem were named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team as announced on Sunday at Waterfront Park in Trenton. Gazzola pitched his fourth complete game of the season as he led the Jaspers to a game one victory over Rider. Salem batted 4-for-9, including a double and two RBI.

 

Gazzola, the 2009 MAAC Pitcher of the Year, tossed the Jaspers to a 2-1 victory over the Broncs in the opening round contest on Thursday. The left-hander from White Plains, N.Y. improved to 7-1 on the season, struck out two batters and yielded just five hits. Gazzola finished the 2009 campaign with a team best 4.15 ERA and .256 batting average against.

 

Salem led the Jaspers with a .444 batting average in the MAAC Championships. The All-MAAC Second Team selection went 3-for-5, recorded two RBI and stole a base in Manhattan’s winners’ bracket showdown with Marist. Salem also drew four walks in the tournament. He finished the campaign with a .380 batting average, 78 hits, 45 RBI and eight home runs.

 

Manhattan advanced to the winners’ bracket of the MAAC Championships after defeating #4 Rider. Although, the Jaspers would fall to #3 Marist, and then #2 Canisius in the double elimination tournament. Manhattan finished 2009 with a program record 35 wins, while also earning the MAAC Regular-Season Championship for the second consecutive season.
