Kayla Grimme Selected MAAC Player of the Week
RIVERDALE, NY – Junior center Kayla Grimme (Altoona, PA) of the Manhattan College women’s basketball team was named the final Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week for the 2016-17 season on Monday. She averaged 29.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in the Jaspers’ final two regular season games against Monmouth and Marist.
After recording 25 points, five rebounds and three blocks against Monmouth on Friday, Grimme erupted for a career-high 34 points in the regular season finale at Marist on Sunday. That total equaled this season’s MAAC single-game high. She scored 30 points in the second half, including 21 in the fourth quarter, en route to the first 30-point performance by a Jasper since Monica Roeder had 35 against East Tennessee State on Nov. 19, 2011. Grimme was a perfect 6-for-6 from three-point range on Sunday, and she also established career-highs with six treys and 13 made field goals.
Earlier on Monday, Grimme was named to the All-MAAC Third Team. She ranks eighth in the conference in scoring (14.4 ppg) and averaged a league-best 17.7 points per game during MAAC play.
She becomes the first Jasper to earn MAAC Player of the Week honors since Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY) was recognized on Jan. 25, 2016. This is Grimme’s second career Player of the Week selection. She was previously honored on Nov. 16, 2015.
Manhattan (8-21, 4-16 MAAC) will face Monmouth (14-15, 9-11 MAAC) again in the first round of the MAAC Tournament at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. The winner will move on to a quarterfinal matchup with Rider (22-7, 16-4 MAAC) at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
