Jaspers Welcome Hartford For Home Opener
RIVERDALE, NY – The Manhattan College softball team (1-4) begins its 2017 home schedule on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Hartford (2-7) at Gaelic Park. Game one of the twinbill is set to begin at 2 p.m.
Manhattan has been off since opening the season with five games at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational in Madeira Beach, FL from Feb. 24-26. Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) tossed a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Harvard in the Jaspers’ opener on Feb. 24. She has started three of Manhattan’s first five games in the circle. Stephanie Reinhardt (Albany, NY) hit the team’s only home run of the tournament and paces the squad with three RBIs. Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ), meanwhile, is the Jaspers’ leading hitter with a .250 batting average.
Hartford just returned from Clearwater, FL, where it took part in the USF-Under Armour Invitational. Elizabeth Newkirk leads the Hawks with nine hits and a .360 batting average. She’s also driven in five runs. Lexi Wilkerson is hitting .333 with a home run and a team-best six RBIs, while Kylie Dazalla has scored six runs. Bianca Ross and Melissa Periera handle the bulk of the pitching duties. They’ve both started four games this season and each has picked up a win. Ross leads the team with 11 strikeouts.
This is Manhattan’s only home twinbill until the start of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on April 1. The Jaspers’ next 19 games will be away from Gaelic Park, starting with a trip to DeLand, FL for the Stetson Westin Invitational this weekend.
