Williams Selected As Final MAAC Pitcher of the Week
RIVERDALE, NY – Manhattan College freshman Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT) received the final Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Pitcher of the Week award for the 2017 season on Tuesday. She tallied 26 strikeouts while posting a 1.98 ERA in road victories over Fairleigh Dickinson, Quinnipiac and Iona, as the Jaspers clinched a spot in the MAAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
After earning the win in Manhattan's 30th victory of the season at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, Williams tossed a six-inning complete game in a 10-2 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday. She collected 13 strikeouts in that contest, including seven in a row, as she struck out the side in both the third and fourth innings.
Williams then outdueled Iona's Alana Evans (who entered the game 10-0 in MAAC play) on Sunday. She held the Gaels to one unearned run on three hits, two of which were infield singles, in a 7-1 victory that officially wrapped up a playoff spot for the Jaspers. Williams struck out the side in the seventh to finish the contest with 10 strikeouts.
She leads the MAAC in both ERA (1.80) and opponents' batting average (.162), and her 114 strikeouts are fourth-most in the conference. Williams is also tied for fourth in the league with 12 wins, including four shutouts.
This is her second MAAC Pitcher of the Week selection this season. She was previously chosen on March 28. Williams has also been named MAAC Rookie of the Week twice (April 11, April 18). Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) is also a two-time MAAC Pitcher of the Week (March 14, April 4), while Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ) took home MAAC Rookie of the Week honors on March 14. In addition, Victoria Ross (Bloomfield, NJ) earned a MAAC Player of the Week nod on March 28.The Jaspers return to Iona this week for the MAAC Tournament. Fourth-seeded Manhattan (33-19, 13-7 MAAC) takes on fifth-seeded Monmouth (22-29, 11-9 MAAC), the team that ended its 2016 campaign, in the first round at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
