Manhattan Selects 2018 Captains
RIVERDALE, NY – The Manhattan College softball team has named its captains for the 2018 season. Seniors Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) and Rachael Mumma (Mechanicsburg, PA) were chosen for the second straight year, and they will be joined by senior Victoria Ross (Bloomfield, NJ). All three were Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Academic Team selections in 2017.
“I'm very happy with all three of these choices,” Head Coach Tom Pardalis said. “They each lead by example, and they're well-respected among their teammates. More importantly, they know what it takes for us to be successful and have passed that knowledge on, which will only make us a better team.”
Matazinsky was selected both First Team All-MAAC as a utility player and Second Team All-MAAC at pitcher last season. She ranked third in the MAAC in both wins (15) and ERA (2.09) while also putting together a .268 batting average in 54 games. Matazinsky tied for second on the squad with nine doubles and scored 33 runs, third-most on the team. In addition, she was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team after earning the win in the Jaspers' 4-3 elimination round victory over Siena.
Mumma appeared in 14 games last season and tallied five hits. One of the more vocal leaders on the team, she provided valuable support for her teammates throughout the season. Mumma also served as a mentor for the Jaspers' younger players.
Ross started 48 games, primarily at third base, and belted five home runs in 2017. Her 29 RBIs were tied for second-most on the team, and she also stole 19 bases to rank third both on the squad and in the conference. Ross was named MAAC Player of the Week on March 28.
Manhattan went 34-21 in 2017, tying the single-season program record for victories. It was the Jaspers' second straight 30-win campaign, and they qualified for the MAAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.
