Rowing Competes At Sacred Heart Invitational
Shelton, CT - Manhattan posted a number of impressive performances at the Sacred Heart Invitational while competing in the Novice 8, JV 8, Varsity 8, Novice 4 and Varsity 4.
The novice 8 fought hard and pulled through with third place at a time of 9:40.1 and was just fast enough to beat out Iona. The novice 8 was coxed by the fortified leadership of Isabel Shirron (Fr., Alexandria, VA / Bishop Ireton) and comprised of Shannon Colford (Fr., Epping, NH/ St. Thomas Aquinas), Kate Sexton (Fr., Wrentham, MA / King Philip Regional), Zoe Nikolopoulos (Fr.,Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central), Naomi Uy (Fr.), Jeanette Burke (So., Libertyville, IL / Libertyville), Carrie Price (Jr.), Leah McGovern (So., Floral Park, NY / Our Lady of Victory) and Erin McWilliams (Fr.).
The JV 8 pulled to the best of their ability but fell short of beating out Iona and Sacred Heart. The squad notched a mark of 9:19.68 and were coxed by Maura Mead (Fr.). Joined Mead on the team was Allison Eichhorn (Fr., Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown), Shannon Forty (Fr., Westford, MA / Westford Academy), Meredith Domaleski (Fr., Cutchogue, NY / Bishop McGann Mercy), Elizabeth McCabe (Fr., Alexandria, VA / Bishop Ireton), Colford, Jaclyn Leighton (Fr., Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania / Holy Redeemer) , Nikolopoulos and Sexton.
The Varsity 8 with a new line-up worked arduously for third place with a time of 8:32.75. Amy Sniffen (Jr., Bedford Hills, NY / Kennedy Catholic) pushed the girls to their max in this race. Also in the boat was Rebecca Arcomano (So., Saugerites, NY / John A. Coleman Catholic), Lorraine Piccorelli (Sr., Brookfield, CT / Brookfield), Phoebe Costello (So., North Haven, CT / Sacred Heart Academy) , Grace Murphy (So., Burlington, MA / Burlington) , Katie Watroba (Sr., Salt Point, NY / Our Lady of Lourdes), Lisa Dominguez (So., Santo Domingo, DR / Bronx Leadership), Jillian Rider (So., Buffalo, NY / Iroquois) and Maggie Tebbetts (Jr., North Haven, CT / North Haven) .
The novice four dominated and swept first place leaving behind USMMA and SUNY Maritime. They completed the course at an impressive 9:37.82. Coxswain Sniffen did not let these girls give up and helped them to sustain are large lead over the other boats. The boat was stroked by Eichhorn and followed by McCabe, Domaleski and Forty.
In the Varsity 4, Manhattan posted an impressive performance and beat out Iona, Suny Maritime and Sacred Heart B while falling only to Sacred Heart A. Coxswain Sniffen secured second place for this boat as she motivated the girls to sustain their lead over Iona, who was on the Jaspers' heels. The boat finished at 9:39.6 thanks to the guidance from Sniffen and was stroked by Arcomano and followed by Piccorelli, Rider and Tebbetts.
The fast-improving Jaspers return to action on Saturday, April 29 at the Spring Metropolitan Championships in New Rochelle.
